City of Austin & Partners Shelter Hundreds During Winter Weather

Dozens of staff from the City of Austin and partner agencies helped shelter hundreds of vulnerable people from the cold weather at up to five overnight Cold Weather Shelters between Thursday evening and Tuesday morning.

During the winter storm that hit Austin, Texas, the city government and local organizations partnered to provide shelter and support for hundreds of people experiencing homelessness. The sudden surge in demand for services was a challenge, but the organizations worked tirelessly to accommodate those in need, with some shelters staying open around the clock. The city government also provided additional resources, including funding for hotel rooms and transportation.

The collaboration between the city government and local organizations was essential in providing life-saving support for the most vulnerable members of the community. While the winter storm has passed, the need for sustainable solutions to address homelessness in Austin remains urgent. By continuing to work together and prioritize funding for affordable housing initiatives and wraparound services, the city can make progress toward ending homelessness and ensuring that everyone has a safe and stable place to call home.
